MOSCOW DAY 3, THE METRO

It was hot.  We had spent a day looking at a magnificent collection of art, barely scratching the surface of the Pushkin Museum's two buildings.  But it was also Sunday afternoon -- the best possible time to visit the famed Moscow metro!

And here it is, tucked next to ...MacDonald's.  (And see?  "24 hours"!)

(Go ahead, sound it out...)

In the door in a rush, under the watchful eye of a very stern guard in a militaristic uniform (and thus, no photos of her...), and into the belly of the beast.

 Very deep, they are.
 And very impressive.

Why not take a train?

OK!

Note the panel describing our progress, with lights flashing as we made our way through the tunnel.

And another!

A rare sighting...
Each station is different, each emphasizing a different theme as well as design.

So you know where you are:

The trains are about 2 minutes apart.  And they open, close, and move fast.

Back we go....

Note the USSR in the mosaic medallion.

 Back to the lobby...

 And out into the world.
Metro mission accomplished!
