The Sultan Ahmed Mosque is known to westerners as the Blue
Mosque, because of the 20,000 tiles inside, of which many are the famous Isznik
blue. It famously has six minarets,
which was controversial at the time, since the mosque at Mecca had only
four. So the sultan had three added to
the mosque in Mecca, for a total of seven, so that his six were not seen as
ostentatious.
