The Goreme Open Air Museum is an area filled with caves carved out of the soft volcanic rock. Some of the caves were used by hermits, others by groups of monks or nuns of the time. Many were churches, with a variety of styles of paintings on the walls and ceilings. Sadly, no photos were permitted of the interiors.
Coincidentally, as we were walking back to our bus I asked our guide about ice cream made from orchid ice cream. I had read about it years ago. It is made from powdered orchid root, along with the usual milk, sugar and flavorings. The orchid root gives the ice cream a substantial quality, and it can be pulled into ropes like taffy, or bounced in a ball. Lo and behold, a variety was being sold in the parking lot from a vendor. It was not true "maresh" but good enough for me. It was delicious, and was smooth and cold like regular ice cream but it had a very thick, chewy consistency. If you have a chance, don't miss it! And, sorry, no pictures -- I was too busy eating!
