Elements 101

A guest

This little fellow was scouring the screen door for bugs. He was so bored while I photographed him that he finally closed his eyes and went to sleep.

A springtime sunset

Our weather has been glorious, about 82 during the day, and about 62 at night, with gentle trades of about 10-15. Just in case you wondered what spring is like on Maui, very much like winter!

More weather

This was part of our Sunday storm.

Tree trimming

Auduman and his crew arrived this morning right on schedule. we walked around and looked at what needed trimming or hacked down completely. They are about halfway done....but the view is improved. And around here, like a haircut, if you don't like it, wait a week. More on Thursday!

Singing and dancing at the Mall....

Yesterday was Queen Kaahumanu's birthday. Our friend David phoned early to say that his choral group would be doing a concert at the Queen Kaahumanu Shopping Center in Kahului. we enjoy the choral group, even though the acoutics at the mall are pretty bad. But, we made our way there, and enjoyed an hour of singing and hula. Very Maui.

I can only upload a little taste, and the acoustics are truly awful. But even from this little snippet you can see how much the ladies are enjoying themselves, and how much we enjoyed seeing them.

Weather

These were taken on Thursday, starting with the pre-dawn setting of the almost full moon, an unusual thunder cloud over Lanai during the day, and the sunset.

As with most of the dawn/sunset photos, these were taken from our lanai. What a life!

Mailbox Series I

I've been walking around the neighborhood every other day (alternating with a bike ride that takes me quite a lot farther). Now that I've gotten more used to the various tropical flora, I've started to notice the mailboxes. In my mother's California neighborhood the mailboxes are identical, block after block. In our California neighborhood, the mailboxes are all different, but usually tucked away and unobtrusive. Here, mailboxes are more of an extension of the artistic sensibilities of the residents. And they are a hoot.

This is a brief collection, from a single walk this morning.

Some mailboxes are all alone....

others are in a group.

Some mailboxes are perky....

others seem droopy.

Some are painted,

others are sanded.

Some designs are architectural,

others are birds...
and others are mammals.

Some are just sitting around....

others are teetering....

others are set in stone.

Some are well maintained....

and others seem forgotten.

And some are just plain cool/weird/unusual.
And one is pretty pretentious (but could stand a little straightening).
