Montmartre

Our second day we had been invited to lunch with Victoire and her mother Berengere in the 9th; Victoire had visited us in California right before our departure. It had been part of her summer US tour with her cousin Pauline. We had a delicious lunch of broccoli quiche, bread and salad, with a cheese course and figs, green plums, and grapes for dessert. We were delighted to have the opportunity to see them, since Berengere was headed off that evening for vacation, and Victoire was going away for the weekend -- and they expected a new exchange student to arrive that evening! So we appreciated the effort Berengere and Victoire made to make such a lovely lunch for us.

After lunch we decided to head off to Montmartre, since we were going to Anne's apartment before dinner. We walked up the hill toward Sacre Coeur, visited the church, then made our way through the Place de Teatre, the lively artists' square very near the church. Then it was down the hill to Anne's. Pauline joined us just as we sat down to dinner at the Cafe de La Butte.

One of the two or three remaining windmills of Montmartre.

This sculpture depicts the heron in a famous French short story. He discovers one day that he can walk through walls, that leads to a career as a burglar, and to many other adventures. he eventually tires of his predicament and takes a pill before bedtime to end his special power. But he is awakened suddenly after he takes the pill and it takes effect just as his is passing through a wall. I'm sure there is much more detail to the story, but here he is at the denouement.

Off to dinner!
