On the ship, on the river....

One aspect of the cruise we had not expected was the experience of being on the river itself.  There were numerous locks -- something over 70 -- during the cruise, and each was an interesting experience.  The first few were riveting, but we gradually got used to the ship stopping and starting, water rushing in around us, and the ship being lifted up to the next level.  It sometimes happened in the middle of the night, and we could feel the familiar shifting of the ship as it prepared for another lock. While we got used to the experience, it was endlessly interesting.

We were also surprised to see almost immediately that the inviting sun deck, with its umbrellas, lounges and plastic partitions around the pool, was made completely flat so that the ship could fit under the old, low bridges.  A few times we were not permitted on deck as we passed under a bridge, and another few times we could stay on deck, but only sitting down.  Even the wheel house would retract into the ship, leaving a skylight for the captain to look out of as he maneuvered.

I have not mentioned the food.  There was a lot of it, and every bite a delight.

A couple of days into the cruise we returned to our room to find that Peter from the housekeeping staff, had left us a space alien to keep us company.

If you are trying to get in your 10,000 steps, the corridors alone would do the trick, although we walked between 2 and 5 miles a day on our various excursions.
