Veliko Tarnovo, Land of the Tsars, was a charming hillside city with shops of handicrafts and Bulgarian rose oil.
We took in spectacular vies of the castles of the tsars.
We stopped in Kazanlak for lunch and a visit to the ethnological museum to sample rose water and liqueur.
The circus was coming to town!
Plovdiv was filled with Roman ruins and excavations.
It is also known for its art deco architecture.
