The epic journey begins : Amsterdam

We arrived at our hotel in Amsterdam a bit fried after our 11 hour flight, at about 10:30 AM.  We had not slept on the plane, so we were ready for a nice long nap.  However, we learned that our room would not be ready until 3, which was a bit annoying.  The people who checked in just before us asked to change their reservation to a room that they could move into immediately; we had no such luck.  Since we had only a few days in Amsterdam, there were only a few options.  So, we were off to the Rijksmuseum!  Even in our altered state, Tom was able to find the right tram, buy tickets and get us on and off.

During our last visit it, as well as the Van Gogh museum and the Naval Museum, had been closed for massive renovations.  The Rijksmuseum at that time placed a dozen or so of its greatest hits in a single large room.  This time, bleary-eyes though we were, we were able to see the whole renovated museum.

A doll house, costing as much as a real one.

The origins of Delft porcelain was the Chinese porcelain imported by Dutch traders.

A new annex of Asian art made us feel quite at home.

After we could keep our eyes open no longer, we went back to our hotel, where our room was ready for us.  It was very nice, and well worth waiting for...although at the time we weren't really sure of it.  In addition to the lovely room, we had a tiny balcony and an excellent view.
