Moulin de la Galette

Back in the day, Montmartre was a small village of shacks and small farms.  There were many windmills for making flour.  Now only two remain, the Mounlin de la Galette, shown here, which is really a restaurant, and the Moulin Radet.  Moulin Radet is on private property so one cannot visit, but Moulin de la Galette is a popular tourist site.  During the time of the impressionists, it was a famous dance hall, popular with not only the locals, but the smart Paris set.  Renoir, Manet, Picasso and Matisse were regulars.  Today thousands troop by every day to take photos.  Happpily, we can see if from our windows.

We had a great meal there recently with friends Joe and Sara, and we're hoping to enjoy another on the rear terrace under the gaze of Renoir's famous Bal au Moulin de la Galette (a copy, bien sur), but the thunderstorm currently raging outside our windows must be replaced by warmer, drier weather.

A bit o' fun with PaperCamera.
