Journees du Patrimoine: Galeries Lafayette

Saturday morning we queued up for a tour of Galeries Lafayette, one of the huge department stores.  We made a reservation for an English tour, lead by the official archivist, a young woman who spoke lovely English.  She and the other tour guides were equipped with ipads to show historical photos and floorplans.  I was disappointed that we did not get to visit any part of the store that we could not see on our own, but it was a pleasant visit and we learned a few things about the history of the store.

In side it is all about the dome, that we learned was built in about 3 months.

We realized that the details had to be very precise, since they are viewable up close from the tiers along the edge of the store.

From parts of the store you can see the exterior of the dome and how it was constructed.

Outside it is all about the view....

first of the exterior of the dome...

 and then of Paris.

We finished up with a few more period details in the interior.
