Hotel Soubise

On Wednesday we made a second trip to the Hotel Soubise, the magnificent home of the Prince and Princess Soubise.  ("Hotel" means a large and magnificent mansion, not an inn.)  They had been members of the court at Versailles, but short of cash.  He went to the country, and she stayed in town -- to become one of the mistresses of Louis XIV, and mother of an illegitimate son who became Cardinal Rohan,  This chateau -- of which you can see only a small part here -- is the king's little thank you for her favors.

We found the Hotel closed yesterday, and today it was also closed -- it turns out that only three rooms of the fabulous apartments were available for viewing.  But we had had wonderful hamburgers and fries at a nearby restaurant -- $60+ for the two of us -- so it was not at all a wasted trip!

A little pocket park between the Hotel Soubise and the Chateau Rohan.
