Versailles -- the Royal Opera House

The table in the foreground is the map table in the king's private apartments.  The hallway was originally open, used for housing horses.  But later modifications enclosed it and made it a staircase to one wing of the more public rooms.

Our tour ended with the Royal Opera House.  This photo is of the stage, where a crew was working on staging a performance,

 A magnificent ceiling.

Some folks watched performances from behind the round screens near the ceiling.

The king could sit in a box, or behind this rectangular screen.

We saw a schedule for performances at the Royal Opera House -- maybe next time?
